2027 Parks & Recreation Strategic Master Plan

Your City. Your Parks.

Help Shape the Future of Grand Rapids Parks

Every playground, trail, neighborhood park, riverfront space, recreation program, and community gathering place tells the story of Grand Rapids. As our city grows and changes, we're updating the Parks & Recreation Strategic Master Plan to ensure our park system continues to meet the needs of current and future generations.

This summer, we'll be working with residents, community organizations, partners, and park users from across the city to create a shared vision for Grand Rapids parks through 2032.

This is your opportunity to help shape the future of the places where we play, connect, explore nature, and build community.

What is a Parks Master Plan?

A Parks & Recreation Strategic Master Plan is the City's roadmap for investing in parks, trails, recreation programs, and public spaces over the next five years.

The plan helps guide decisions about:

  • Park improvements and renovations
  • Recreation programs and community events
  • Trail and river connectivity
  • Athletic fields and sports facilities
  • Nature and environmental stewardship
  • Operations and maintenance priorities
  • Future investments and grant opportunities

The plan is also required by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to maintain eligibility for future recreation grant funding.

Building on Momentum

Since the adoption of the first Strategic Master Plan in 2017 and the 2022 update, Grand Rapids has invested in neighborhoods, expanded recreation opportunities, improved accessibility, strengthened park maintenance, and continued implementing projects supported by the Parks Millage.

The 2027 update will build upon that work while exploring new opportunities, including:

  • Improving trail and park connections throughout the city
  • Expanding access to the Grand River
  • Better understanding how athletic fields and courts are used
  • Exploring innovative recreation experiences
  • Planning for climate resilience and sustainable parks
  • Continuing equity-centered investments that ensure every resident has access to quality parks and recreation
